Lesson to us all. Everyone remember Kayla Mendoza the young woman who got into her car, way too drunk to be behind the wheel and went flying down an exit the wrong way and then killing to youngsters her own age? Well, here’s the latest.
Sitting in a wheelchair in a Broward courtroom Wednesday, her hands cuffed, her face streaked with tears, Mendoza, 22, accepted legal responsibility for her actions, pleading guilty to two counts of DUI manslaughter and apologizing to the family members of the women she killed, Marisa Catronio and Kaitlyn Nicole Ferrante.
There you have it kids, don’t drink and drive, how many times do we have to say that… jeez.
On the night of the crash, Mendoza had been drinking with co-workers at a Coral Springs restaurant, according to court records. Her blood alcohol level was .15, nearly twice the legal limit of .08, when she was traveling east in the westbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway for seven miles at speeds of over 80 miles an hour. There were traces of marijuana in her system, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
