We are on a quest, one that many others have followed and have tried, but have never done a great job of. We have it to go out, get on our bike and photograph all of the themed villages that George Merrick had designed when he was planning, had planned, the City of Coral Gables. Yes, there are certainly quite a bit of smaller, sometimes interesting photos of these little enclaves, but honestly we’ve yet to come across a full catalog of all seven. Those that we have stumbled across of course tend to be from real estate websites or other sort of tourism sites, but nothing that really captures the as many of the homes as possible. So, despite it being summer, this is one of our sworn projects and we will be posting them as we get them done.
The seven villages, in absolutely no particular order are:
The French Country Village
The Chinese Village
The French City Village
The Dutch South African Village
The Florida Pioneer Village
French Normandy Village
The Italian Village
All of these were designed by different architects and were theoretically the villages that were acceptable to be built by Merrick in “His City”. To this day, while The Chinese Village remains more or less unique in and of itself, most of the basic design elements of the other villages have continued to find their way into the built vernacular of Coral Gables. Stayed tuned, we’ll post and write about them as we photograph them.
