As a local event to coincide with the National March For Science taking place in Washington DC, tomorrow is the People’s Climate March in Miami which will begin at Jose Marti Park in Downtown Miami at 1pm. The march will go to Government Center and then will end in Overtown at the Lyric Theater.
All of us, as South Florida and particularly Miami residents are well aware of the damage and chaos that a changing climate is already causing for us here locally. The beach communities are flooding more than ever, the water is higher and lasts longer. We are the community that will be one of the first to disappear over the coming few decades.
The march itself and the route it is taking shouldn’t be lost on any of us, from Jose Marti through downtown these are some of the most vulnerable neighborhoods along the river and those with the most to lose. Put simply – “Facing sea-level rise, water contamination and perilous tropical diseases and extreme weather changes, the city of Miami’s residents must ensure their city is protected from the perils of climate change.”

On the national stage, 350.org is the bigger “parent” organization.
